Have you ever looked pain in the eye? Without a doubt you have–this brokenness that hides, but becomes visible in one’s eyes. Yes, it’s hidden behind bright smiles, infectious laughter, and words of I’m Great!, Things have been a little hectic, but I’m fine, and I’m going to be okay once things slow down–but things never slow!
Other times, eyes rain with tears saturated in pain and faces crumble under the weight of torment. We become still…we search our brains for words to soothe–to remove the tears, pain–we want the moment and the pain to pass. It feels uncomfortable this raw emotion…nakedness…vulnerability this being real. We want to hide too. He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” Genesis 3:10. We feel helpless…unable to make it right. But do we run? Do we miss it…this chance to be the balm that soothes the pain, hurt, cutting of ones soul?
Do we let the serpent win, yet again? When we hurriedly brush aside the pain…clean up the mess…believe the lie “I’m alright now,” are we letting the twisted snake gain victory. One chocolate drop is never enough…how can one hug, one I love you mend the chasm ripped wide in someone soul? But it’s easy, less messy, and a whole lot faster.
If the hurts are never mended, if the pain is never removed, if the wound is never healed will that precious soul ever be free?. Will the one walking behind the pain filled eyes (disguised behind a laugh) wonder in the wilderness and never leave the desert. Yes, they are delivered, but are they free? Do we walk away or do we play a part in crushing the serpents poisonous venom?
If we stay, if we continue to give love, and if we see this thing through all the way to the end, maybe just maybe, we help someone walk in freedom rather than wonder in the desert.
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, Luke 4:18.

whoa! This hit me like a ton of bricks! “if we stay, if we continue to give love, and if we see this thing through all the way to the end……sometimes it’s hard to keep circling that prayer over and over, and be loving, so that they may know Jesus. Isn’t this called ‘die to self?’ At times yes! Love this post!

Shelly, I looked into the eyes of pain last weekend and couldn’t get the image out of my mind, therefore I felt it necessary to share a post on other’s pain. Thanks for your encouraging words. Blessings, Kasey

Mary, I’m so excited to meet someone from New Zealand! The only time I’ve ever been outside the US is once to Mexico when I was 19. However my daughter and I are going on a mother-daughter retreat to Canada next summer. Glad you liked the post. My pastor preached a sermon resently on how often we are delivered but are not free–Christ died for both. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I always enjoy reading what others are thinking. Blessings, Kasey
