Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. James 4:14. So teach us to number our days, that we may present to You a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12.
For those of us who live in North America our culture is constantly whispering loudly that we deserve certain things…safety, comfort, happiness, material possessions, and most importantly personal rights. Human…conventional wisdom, personal…practical choice, and political correctness has replaced Biblical truth–the new normal.
Normal (sameness–doing what everyone else is doing) is comforting, it feels good. However, God doesn’t allow the culture to dictate His plans. His plans are most likely counter-cultural (not normal) and often times we won’t even understand them.
We trust that God is able to give us eternal life, save us from our sins, but do we trust Him with our day to day activities. Can we hand our agenda’s over to an invisible God? To completely and finally release the reigns, to yield without restraints, to entirely forsake our lives to God, and to surrender authorship of our story to the Creator of the universe.
Giving up normal and allowing God’s pen to direct our path can be scary…terrifying. Although, control is an illusion (see Control Is An Illusion) we humans hold onto it with a death grip. We want to make our own plans, follow our own paths, and live life our own self-seeking way.
We fear surrendering our lives to God. The One, who spoke the world into existence, who hung the sun and moon, and who lite the stars in the sky. God crafted each of us uniquely to fulfill external purposes, purposes designed just for us. If we choose to obey, give our lives over to His plans, we who are but dust get to be a part of God’s grand story. He was willing to generously write us into His novel. “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” Luke 1:38.
We are here to glorify God by pouring into the lives of the lost, wounded, and broken. We must trust God and die daily to our own desires. Allowing God to write our script even when we don’t understand his ways. What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? Matthew 16:26.
“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” –Jim Elliot.
Our lives are but a breath…our time on earth is short…we haven’t a minute to waste. We must learn to number our days.
Risk, jump in with both feet, and live the life we were meant to live.
Count blessings, Kasey
