The Hand That Rocks The Cradle Is The Hand That Rules The World

“Hear, O Israel:  The LORD our God, the LORD is one!  You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.  “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart.  You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.  You shall bind them as a sign on your hands, and they shall be frontlets between the eyes.  You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.  Deuteronomy 6:4-9

“The hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world” is a poem written by William Ross Wallace (1819-1881).

BLESSINGS on the hand of women!

Angels guard its strength and grace,

In the place, cottage, hovel,

Oh, no matter where the place;

Would that never storms assailed it,

Rainbows ever gently curled,

For the hand that rocks the cradle

Is the hand that rules the world.

Infancy’s the tender fountain,

Power may with beauty flow,

Mothers first to guide the streamlets,

From them souls unresting grow—

Grow on for the good or evil,

Sunshine streamed or evil hurled,

For the hand that rocks the cradle

Is the hand that rules the world.

Woman, how divine your mission,

Here upon our natal sod;

Keep—oh, keep the young heart open

Always to the breath of God!

All true trophies of the ages

Are from mother-love impearled,

For the hand that rocks the cradle

Is the hand that rules the world.

Blessings on the hand of women!

Fathers, sons, and daughters cry,

And the sacred song is mingled

With the worship in the sky—

Mingles where no tempest darkens,

Rainbows evermore are hurled;

For the hand that rocks the cradle

Is the hand that rules the world.

We live in a culture that screams, loud and clear, it’s all about ME–rising to the top (being the best–even at the expense of others), acquiring material things, and gratifying ourselves.  Where do children fit into this picture?  I’m not sure they do.

We must not let the noise of this culture over power that of the gospel.  The truth is parenting is of value.  It is of the utmost importance that we train our children to love, honor, and serve our Lord.  It is neither unworthy or secondary to any other work done for the kingdom of Christ.

The world wants us to believe that we are wasting our talents on our families. That we should go out into the world and use them for the good of the whole community.  The truth, however, is that we are using our talents for the betterment of the whole.  We are training, teaching, and showing our children how to love and serve others–we are raising children who will glorify the Lord.

It is also a commandment given by the Lord.  And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart.  You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.  You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and shall be as frontlets between your eyes.  You shall write them on the door posts of your house and on your gates.  Deuteronomy 6:6-9

The hand that rocks the cradle does have eternal value.  We are the instruments God is using to build His kingdom.

Count blessings, Kasey
