Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, For he has no one to help him up. Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; But how can one be warm alone? Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken. Ecclesiastes 5:9-12
Sometimes, the road of life takes us places we never intended or thought we would go. We start out following the map until we encounter our first detour; we navigate a turn, a curve, go down an off the map road and before we realize it we don’t know where we are, how we got here, or how to get back. We’ve collected dust, dirt, grime, and mud alone the way. We’ve got no cell phone service and we’re stuck on a dead end road. What do we do? LOOK UP! Don’t look to the left or to the right, keep your eyes fixed on Jesus! So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” Matthew 14:29-31 When we lose our way feel dirty and beaten up by life we only have to look up–Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him. A man’s heart plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps. Proverbs 16:9
The bride was dressed in a lovely gown, her face radiating the love within her heart. Her eyes were posed straight ahead, fixed on her handsome groom. On the wall just behind her groom’s head was the cross–A threefold cord is not quickly broken. The wedding vows are spoken, they turn and face the congregation–abundant-joy, infinite-love beaming from both. Only blue skies and rainbows ahead. But! Life happens-detours, turns, curves, off the map roads–house payments, car insurance, traditions, family, children, bills, and fading dreams. They arrive at a dead end road. But they serve a God who NOTHING IS TO HARD FOR! They believe two are better than one. They take seriously Matthew 19: 4-6 And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that he who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female’, and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” They remember to LOOK UP–a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
There’s a verse in Ephesians that says, Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. Ephesians 5:33
Friends’ husbands are called to love their wives, BUT wives you are called to respect them. This little verse can make a big difference in your marriage. Ephesians 3:20 says, Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
